When Margaret starts a rehearsal
with “We got a call from someone… (pause),” we know that whatever offer
she’s going to tell us about will be… well, DIFFERENT. Like when we
Accidental women sang with the Brooklyn Philharmonic at the Brooklyn
Academy of Music. We were the vocal quartet for the New York Premiere
of “De Stijl,” by Dutch minimalist Louis Andriessen.
Andriessen
is a central figure in the international
new music scene, and is widely regarded as the
leading composer working in the Netherlands today. The piece was inspired
by the paintings of Dutch artist Piet Mondrian. Challenging music, to
say the least!
Time changes, key changes,
dissonance and lyrics in DUTCH – we loved it! The horns in one tempo,
percussionists in another, and we vocalists out on our own. Lots of
brass, lots of fugues, and a “rap biography” of Mondrian by actress
Gertrud Thoma. All under the superb direction of conductor Robert Spano.
